When we returned to the Packhouse, Bayla was sitting on the sofa chatting with Black in what was once their living space. They appeared to be comfortable. I could detect no nervousness from her.

Theo went directly to the kitchen. “I’m starving.”

I walked to Bayla and leaned down to brush my lips against hers.

“Did you have a good run?” she asked quietly.

“Yes.” I found that I was still smiling at her.

“Lore, are you hungry? I’m making a sandwich,” Theo called from the kitchen.

“I could eat something.” Black got to his feet. “Shall we adjourn to the table?”

Bayla followed Black. “I can help in the kitchen.” She continued walking past the table.

“Sit.” Black pointed to the chair at the opposite end of the table.

I did.

“Did she tell you about the visions?”

“Yes.”

“Do you know what’s going on?” He glanced toward the kitchen, and I knew that he meant with Bayla’s coven.

“I know bits and pieces, but I do not have the entire story.”

“I wish I could tell you that we have time…”

I knew we did not have that luxury.

“She wakes up screaming,” he said very quietly.

That did not sound pleasant. “I understand.” I had not pressured Bayla to share her secrets. Once we were away from her home, I had hoped she would feel safe and do so voluntarily.

“Do you get what I’m saying, Lore?”

He would question Bayla, possibly push her for explanations, and he didn’t want me to interfere. “I do, Laird.” I held his gaze.

“This brings me no pleasure.”

Making difficult decisions rarely did.

“I made roast beef with lots of spicy mustard.” Theo placed a plate in front of Black. Then she held out a plate to me. “You get a combo of turkey, bacon, and ham with mayo.”

Bayla placed a bowl of coleslaw in the middle of the table, and another filled with potato chips. “I think they have every deli meat imaginable in their fridge,” she said smiling.

“Sit,” Theo pointed to the empty chair on Black’s left. “I’m taking drink orders.”

We gave our requests, and she returned to the kitchen.

“Did you enjoy your time with Solle?” I asked.

“I did, and Tay is adorable.” She leaned back in her chair, looking relaxed.

Theo returned. “I knew those years that I waitressed would pay off.” She gave us our drinks and looked around the table. “Anybody need anything?”

“If they do, I’ll get it. You sit down and eat.” Bayla wasn’t eating.

“Bayla, are you sure you don’t want anything?”

“I’m still full from Solle’s lunch.” Bayla pulled her glass closer. “Go on and eat.”

Theo took her seat. “Thanks, I’m starving.”

After Theo had taken a few bites, she told Bayla, “I think you’ll find that we spend a great deal of time eating. Somebody is always hungry. If one eats, everybody usually joins in.”

“I like to cook,” Bayla said, then lifted a brow as she turned to me, “not that I’ve been given many chances.”

“We’re lucky.” Theo flashed a smile at Black. “The Packhouse has a great staff that makes anything I ask for. I finally
